25+25+Aboriginal Dance and Reconciliation - Laura Festival 2001 - Celebrating The Australian

"Ancient Wisdom and Youthful Energy"

The biannual festival began in the early 80s when communities in the Cape York region decided to reunite for a weekend of song, dance and celebration. 2001 was the fourteenth festival held on the sacred  Bora grounds, located 15 km outside Laura, Cape York. The theme was Reconciliation.

Held over three days, the June 2001 programme included:

  • 25+ Aboriginal communities performing traditional dance and song;
  • Traditionall Art and Craft workshops;
  • Evening concerts featuring internationally famous and locally known bands, with actress Leah Purcell as the MC;
  • Cape York Art Awards Exhibition;
  • Didjeridoo competions;
  • Spear and Boomerang throwing competitions;
  • Guided tours to the unique Quinkan Rock Art sites; and
  • A "Night Walk" for Reconciliation.

As the Bora grounds are sacred the Laura Festival is strictly a "dry" event, which means No Drugs or Alcohol are allowed into the campgrounds.

The 2007 Laura Aboriginal Dance and Cultural Festival will begin on the 22nd June 2007
